When I was 18, I became one of Portland’s youngest marketing specialists of a local business, TartBerry, Inc.

I was incredibly excited and insanely nervous. The business is one of the most popular self-serve frozen yogurt shops in downtown Portland. This colorful yogurt shop with artsy decor features endless flavors and a giant toppings bar with over 50 different varieties. TartBerry is the Disneyland of Rose City.

This was a huge opportunity but only if I could figured out how to increase the business’s revenue. Also, this was a first time in four decades, the share of Americans living in middle-income households fell below 51 percents in 2015, and TartBerry was experiencing a slowdown.

I decided to start by learning as much about the business and its industry as I could. At first blush, TartBerry didn’t have a strong social media presence. In the digital age, social media plays a big part in acquiring, retaining and satisfying the customer. And TartBerry needed to take action. That became the connection that drove the idea of creating Facebook Ads for the business.

The slogan, “Kindness and Laughter translate in any Language” was used to promote the culture at TartBerry. I called my friend from college, Nicholas Spaulding, who is a talented graphic designer. We designed images for the Facebook campaign that tied in all the unique elements of TartBerry. We specifically highlighted the late closing hours, hinting that TartBerry is a perfect place for late night munchies. Most importantly, I was able to increase TartBerry’s social media exposure by creating valuable content, interacting with our followers, and picking the right times to post.

Expanding on the online work, I further helped TartBerry plan exciting events and contests that created customers for life. Additionally, I was lucky enough to learn from the owners about operating a small business and got recommended to a friend’s real estate business in Portland.

Results

In 2015, the social media marketing campaign was TartBerry’s biggest and most successful marketing campaign with: 31% increase in customers, 2x more Instagram followers, 3x more Twitter followers, And over 3,100 ad impressions.
